Janet C. Messmer




Professor and Head of the Costume Technology Program for the Theatre School of DePaul University, Janet served as  Costume Curator for the Evanston History Center for more than 27 years.  She mines her years of experience as a professional costumiere and researcher into the history of costume to provide entertaining and informative lectures on many topics related to the history of clothing and its relationship to social history. Subjects have included:  “Crinolines, Croquet and a Dip in the Sea:  Victorian Sports and Sportswear;” “Cocktails for Two: the Evolution of Cocktails, Cocktail Parties and the Cocktail Dress;” and “The Sartorial Choices of Jane Austen’s Gentlemen: English Men’s Wear, 1795-1820.”
